Lithuania joins convention on manipulation of sports competitions

On 18 September, Deputy Minister of the Interior Elvinas Jankevicius on behalf of the Republic of Lithuania signed the international Convention on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions, the ministry said in a statement, cites LETA/ELTA.

The Convention was ratified by the ministers responsible for sports of the states of the Council of Europe gathered to the 13th conference in Macoline, Switzerland.

 

Convention on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions is a set of international standards which, hopefully, will become an effective instrument in the fight against manipulation of sports competitions on the international level. In the Convention, the greatest attention is paid to measures of international cooperation and prevention, threat assessment and management, exchange of information, personal data protection, cooperation of law enforcement institutions, responsibilities and sanctions. The Convention also provides definitions, unifying understanding and assessment of the match-fixing phenomenon, among them - manipulation of sports competitions, sports betting, illegal sports betting, suspicious sports betting, etc.

 

"Standards of activity and cooperation mechanisms defined in the Convention will be essential in formation of national strategy of the fight against manipulations of sports competitions. We must develop active cooperation on the international level with other states and international organizations, sharing information and good experience in accordance with the agreed standards," said the deputy minister.
