Motion to exclude Russia from SWIFT payment system not reviewed in EU

BC, Riga, 22.09.2014.Print version
The motion to exclude Russia from the SWIFT payment system was not put forward at the European Union Council meetings, the Foreign Affairs Ministry's press secretary Karlis Eihenbaums told LETA.

"It could be considered after evaluating further developments in Ukraine," Eihenbaums explained.

As reported, in a resolution passed last week the European Parliament (EP) welcomed the ratification of the Association Agreement with Ukraine and steps being taken to restore peace in Ukraine, at the same time condemning the Russian Federation for waging an undeclared "hybrid war" against Ukraine, urging the European Union member states to cancel planned agreements with Russia in the energy sector and to support farmers affected by Russia's food embargo.

Marta Ribele, acting head of the EP Information Office in Latvia informed LETA that the EP also supports the EU sanctions against Russia and condemns Russia's so-called "counter-sanctions" as unjustified. MEPs also suggested that the EU consider excluding Russia from civil nuclear cooperation and the SWIFT payment system.
