Taking into consideration the developments in Ukraine, the Baltic countries need to beef up their eastern borders, the retired fleet admiral Andrejs Mezmalis, who has served in the U.S. and Latvian armies, said in an interview on Latvian State Radio yesterday, cites LETA.

"Speaking of the eastern border, I believe that the government has to insist, in the European Union and NATO, that the eastern borders of the Baltic countries are also the borders of the EU and NATO," stressed Mezmalis, also adding that these were the borders that contraband goods and human trafficking routes were crossing.

"We see complete units of armored vehicles that have crossed into Ukraine. Strengthening the borders of all three Baltic countries is what we need, and our government must insist on it," said Mezmalis.

Mezmalis reminded that the people are the most precious resource for any country, especially those with high qualifications, for instance, those who can speak English; they would be useful for Latvia's defense, he believes.

Mezmalis, born in Riga in 1938, grew up and was educated in the United States. He served in the U.S. Army and Latvian National Armed Forces.
