Yesterday Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) signed a decree on former Health Minister Ingrida Circene's (Unity) resignation, while the potential candidate for this position – Vice-Rector for Development at Riga Stradins University Toms Baumanis – could decide whether to accept the offer on Wednesday or Thursday, informs LETA.

Laimdota Straujuma and Ingrida Circene.

After the coalition meeting on Monday, Straujuma said that she had discussed specific minister's duties with Baumanis. He will get acquainted with the relevant documents, meet with the Health Ministry's State Secretary Rinalds Mucins and afterwards give his final answer.

Straujuma believes that it would be very good if the next health minister would stay on in the post after the elections. At the same time she stressed that Baumanis does not plan on running in this year's Saeima elections, furthermore, Unity has already confirmed its list of candidates.

Currently, Straujuma has assumed the health minister's duties.

When asked about other possible solutions should Baumanis decline the offer, Straujuma said: "I do not wish to talk about plan B, we are currently focusing on plan A."

Previous reports indicate that Baumanis could turn down the opportunity to become the health minister, while Unity continues discussions attempting to persuade him.

As reported, Circene submitted her resignation on July 7.
