Lithuanian president not rushing to support the proposal to reduce VAT to 18%

BC, Vilnius, 15.07.2014.Print version
President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite is not rushing to support the proposal to reduce Value Added Tax (VAT) to the pre-crisis levels, i.e. from 21 to 18%, writes LETA/ELTA.

She says this would not help reduce social exclusion as "the richer would have wider support".

"Taxation issues should never be discussed taking one tax from the equation. All taxes have to be considered together, depending on what result is expected to be achieved," Grybauskaite said.

The president made it no secret that VAT reduction would have an impact on other goals.

"One can imagine what implications this would bring and how this would impact our goals, when we consider raising pensions, increasing the lowest benefits and salaries," said Grybauskaite.

The head of state said that reducing social exclusion is the main task.
