BC, Tallinn, 09.07.2014.Print version
On Tuesday, Estonia assumed Presidency in the International Helsinki Committee (HELCOM) co-operating in order to protect the Baltic Sea natural environment, writes LETA/National Broadcasting.

Minister of Environment Keit Pentus-Rosimannus said that during the next two years, the focus of the Baltic Sea States will be on three main areas: prevention of pollution, planning of maritime areas and conservation areas, and on improving reliability of data.

Pentus-Rosimannus remarked that the Baltic Sea is highly sensitive to pollution and emissions.

She said that there are plenty to do to improve the state of the Baltic Sea, and that Estonia is facing its Presidency with high hopes. During the past ten years, Estonia has invested 600 million euros into improving the situation with the Baltic Sea and the results can be seen, as several species that are particularly sensitive to the quality of water have returned to Estonian shores.
