Latvian Health Minister to resign of her own volition

BC, Riga, 07.07.2014.Print version
Latvia’s Minister of Health Ingrida Circene (Unity) has decided to resign of her own free will and could submit her resignation to Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) today, according to information from LETA sources.

The reason Circene is to give for stepping down is her constant health problems. Right now, she is recovering from spinal surgery.

However, the Ministry of Health informed LETA that it does not have such information, therefore, it cannot verify it.

As reported, Straujuma has taken on the health minister's duties herself. Circene has been unable to say when she will return to work.

Straujuma previously told LETA that at the beginning of June, she could propose possible solutions to issues concerning the health care field. She planned to meet with Circene on the first week of July to discuss further action. "It is obvious that health care requires a minister," Straujuma said.

Saeima Speaker Solvita Aboltina indicates that she agrees with Latvian President Andris Berzins' statement that "it is not normal that the prime minister has to assume the duties of a minister."

Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) is refraining to comment on the rumors about Minister of Health Ingrida Circene's (Unity) possible resignation.

Straujuma's press secretary Dzeina Tamulevicaina told LETA that Straujuma does not have any information, and has not received Circene's resignation yet.

Tamulevicaina said that Straujuma could comment on this matter after the coalition board meeting, which starts at 2:30 p.m. The prime ministr did not meet with press representatives after today's Saeima emergency meeting.
