Latvian pensioners to hold demonstration on September 6
The aim is to express the pensioners' attitude toward the government's performance, which, according to the federation, is unsatisfactory. "We will do everything to gather as many senior citizens in Riga, as we can," Silins said.
Today's meeting with Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) did not give hope that the pensioners' demands will be satisfied in the near future. "We were convinced that some of the smaller issues will be solved, however, in regard to much larger problems, the bottom line was that the government simply lacks the necessary funds," Silins explained.
One of the smaller issues that the government plans to solve is the criteria for waste disposal costs, which, the federation believes, is a non-objective decision.
The government also plans to raise the minimum pension in Latvia, Silins said. However, it will be possible no sooner than in 2016.
The Latvian Pensioners Federation representatives also plan to inform Latvian President Andris Berzins about the situation. A meeting is scheduled for July 15.
