U.S. congresswoman meets with Latvian officials on Ukraine

The subject was Ukraine yesterday in talks between Latvian officials and visiting U.S. Congressional representative from Minnesota Michelle Bachman (R), informs LETA.

Saeima Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Ojars Kalnins that at the meeting, attended by MPs and officials from the Foreign Ministry, the accent was placed on Latvia's viewpoint concerning sanctions, NATO's efforts and the Russian community in Latvia.

 

Bachman had high praise for U.S.-Latvian cooperation, also "Latvia's active and pragmatic position on key foreign policy issues."

 

Kalnins commented that the congresswoman was "by herself with three consultants, but did not say much." Her sphere of interest includes Poland and Estonia, and according to Kalnins, is "gathering information on what is happening here and how we see current events in Europe and NATO."

 

Asked whether the meeting touched upon the reports of a pending military presence by NATO and U.S. forces in Latvia, Kalnins responded: "She listened with interest but expressed no opinion."

 

From the Foreign Ministry, meeting with Bachman were Baiba Braze, chief of the Security Policy Directorate, Viktors Makarovs, the parliamentary secretary, and Janis Kazocins, deputy state secretary.
