Long-serving Ogre mayor in Latvia ousted
10 out of 17 Ogre Regional Council members voted to oust Bartkevics.
According to LETA archives, Bartkevics first become chairman of the Ogre Regional Council in 1994, and has been re-elected six times since then. The only time he was not the chairman of the council was a brief period from March 2001 to July 2002.
Since 2004, Bartkevics has also served as chairman of the regional party – For Ogre Region.
It is interesting to point out that two of Bartkevics' party members supported his ouster.
Bartkevics previously said that one of the main reasons for the move to oust him could be associated with local retail traders' interests. "To put it bluntly, they want to avoid competition and prevent the arrival of the Rimi chain store," said Bartkevics.
The new head of Ogre was elected the music school director Arturs Margulis (the Latvian "green" party).
