EUR 59,000,000 set aside by Latvian government for new prison

BC, Riga, 15.04.2014.Print version
Latvian Justice Minister Baiba Broka (VL!-TB/LNNK) announced at a press conference today that the ministry estimates that EUR 59,000,000 will be necessary for a new federal prison, informs LETA.

Project for Olaine prison.

This amount includes all costs in the planning stages and for the actual construction.

Broka said that she does not rule out that the expenditures could be less, because Latvia will be adapting the prison project from Estonia, who already has built two modern, European-standard prisons. Latvia has no experience in building such facilities, Broka added.

Talks with Estonian counterparts are under way and, in fact, have progressed so far that a cooperation agreement could be signed soon.

It is still unclear where the new prison will be located. The initial place – Olaine, was rejected because suitable land property could not be found. The complex requires 20 hectares.
