On Thursday, diplomatic relations were established between Latvia and Liberia in New York, LETA was informed by the Foreign Ministry.

A Joint Communiqué on establishing diplomatic relations between both countries was signed on behalf of Latvia by the Latvian Ambassador to the UN in New York Janis Mazeiks and on behalf of Liberia, by the Liberian Ambassador to the UN in New York Marjon Kamara.

During their meeting, the ambassadors expressed satisfaction at the establishment of diplomatic relations that will further promote the already existing good cooperation at the bilateral level as well as in the framework of international organizations. The ambassadors discussed the priorities of Latvia and Liberia in the United Nations, as well as possibilities for cooperation in defining the post-2015 development agenda and promoting gender equality.

Both ambassadors stressed the necessity to facilitate a dialogue between UN member states from various regions and agreed that Latvia's presidency of the EU in the first half of 2015 will also provide opportunities in this regard.

Already prior to the establishment of diplomatic relations, practical cooperation had been developed in the security sector. Soldiers of the National Armed Forces of Latvia jointly with the National Guard of the United States have trained instructors and officers of the Liberian army since 2012.
