Straujuma to sign decree on releasing Cilinskis

BC, Riga, 14.03.2014.Print version
Today, Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) will sign a decree on releasing Environmental Protection and Regional Development Minister Einars Cilinskis (All for Latvia!-For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK) from his duties, informs LETA.

Cilinskis has not changed his mind and will participate in the traditional March 16 procession at the Freedom Monument. Therefore the prime minister will sign the decree dismissing Cilinskis from his job, Straujuma's press secretary Andis Blinds confirmed to LETA.

"I have been participating in March 16 events for many years. I will honor Latvia's freedom fighters at the Freedom Monument, during the service in Riga Cathedral and in Lestene Cemetery," explained the minister.

Cilinskis stressed that, in doing so, he would also honor Latvia's statehood.

Straujuma explains that 48 hours have passed since her warning to release Cilinskis if he did not change his mind. Straujuma believes that relieving Cilinskis of his duties is her right and duty, since the minister has not observed the government's decision.

The prime minister reminds that Latvia honors its fallen soldiers on November 11, Lacplesis Day.

Straujuma is currently on a regional visit to Latgale. However, she will sign the decree later today.

As reported, the government voted on March 11 to forbid ministers to attend March 16 events.

Cilinskis did not support the government's decision and voted "against" in the vote.

Straujuma has pointed out that, in order to prevent unnecessary provocations in Latvia and follow the coalition's agreement, she intends to release any minister if he or she announces participation in the March 16 events at the Freedom Monument.
