BC, Riga, 12.03.2014.Print version
At the moment, at the beginning of 2014 there are 5,112 persons locked up in Latvia's prisons, which is about 1,000 less inmates when compared to the same period last year, reports LETA, referring to information from the Latvian Prison Administration.

LPA spokeswoman Ilona Spure explained the relatively substantial reduction in the number of inmates with legislation passed last year, which reduces the penalties for separate crimes.

Furthermore, she explained that the reduction in the country's total population has also impacted the number of prison inmates.
