Trade union demands pay rise for police officers and firefighters in Latvia

BC, Riga, 18.06.2013.Print version
The Latvian United Police Trade Union has sent a letter to Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis (Unity) demanding to restore salaries and social guarantees for police officers, prison guards and firefighters to the pre-crisis level, informs LETA.

According to the trade union, State Police and State Fire and Rescue Service salaries were cut by 50 to 55% during the crisis. Moreover, police officers and firefighters were deprived of most social guarantees.

This year, their salaries were raised by 10%, but they are still far from the pre-crisis level.

At the moment, State Police and State Fire and Rescue Service salaries are not competitive – the reason behind people quitting, the union points out. The process has become uncontrollable and the lack of personnel is catastrophic. Without enough attention, the matter could become a threat to national security and public order and affect all residents in the nearest future, explains the union.
