Amended insurance law in Lithuania to prevent treating gender as risk factor

BC, Vilnius, 26.04.2013.Print version
Lithuanian parliament has adopted amendments to the Law on Insurance, harmonising the Law with the judgment of the Court of Justice of the European Union delivered on 1 March of 2011, reported LETA/ELTA the press service of the Seimas said.

The adopted amendments will prevent the insurer from treating the gender of an insured individual as a risk factor. The EU member-states are obliged to implement these provisions by the judgment delivered on 1 March of 2011 by the Court of Justice.

"A new version of the law had been adopted before and will come into force as of 1 January of 2014. Therefore, for the period before the said date, we still need to amend the Law on Insurance that is currently in place and to repeal the exemption which allows, in certain cases, to take the gender of an insured individual into account when imposing terms and conditions of insurance," Minister of Finance Rimantas Sadzius.

The amendments were adopted by 64 votes in favour with 2 against and 18 abstentions.
