Latvia and Lithuania should coordinate their stances on important EU matters

During an informal meeting of European and North American foreign and security policy experts in the Lithuanian city of Trakai today, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics (Reform Party) met with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius, emphasizing a potential for expanding bilateral cooperation, informs LETA.

The ministers lauded the excellent neighbor relations between Latvia and Lithuania and assessed the recommendations of the Report on Latvian-Lithuania Cooperation Perspectives, as well as various formats established to promote Latvian-Lithuanian cooperation, strengthen the identity of the Balts, their language and culture. As an example, the officials mentioned the Baltic Unity Day and the Latvian-Lithuanian Forum, which should bring about specific results and improve bilateral cooperation in the future, LETA was informed by the Foreign Ministry's Press and Information Division.

 

Rinkevics emphasized that it is important for Latvian and Lithuania to coordinate their stances on important EU matters, especially due to the approaching Lithuanian and Latvian presidencies of the Council of the European Union. Taking into account that the EU Eastern Partnership summit will be held in Lithuania this year and in Latvia in 2015, the ministers agreed to organize these important events in close cooperation to ensure successive Eastern Partnership policy-making.

 

Rinkevics also invited the Lithuanian prime minister to visit Latvia. Rinkevics' agenda indicates that Linkevicius will visit Latvia next week.
