Today, the Agreement between the European Union and the Federative Republic of Brazil on Short-stay Visa Waiver for Citizens of the European Union comes into force.

This means that, as of today, those Latvian citizens who travel to Brazil for tourism, private or business purposes or to participate in conferences, seminars and sports events will not have to obtain a visa for entering Brazil if their period of stay there does not exceed three months in a six month period, LETA was informed by Latvian Foreign Ministry's Press and Information Department.

The agreement will not apply to those EU and Brazilian citizens whose aim of entry will be employment, research work, traineeship, studies or social work.

Just like before, Latvian non-citizens will need a visa that can be obtained at the Brazilian Embassy in Sweden accredited to Latvia.

Estonian citizens can travel to Brazil visa free for tourism and business purposes and can stay there visa free for up to three months over a half a year, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

Estonian foreign minister Urmas Paet said that visa freedom is an impetus to tourism development as well as to Estonian-Brazilian economic and cultural ties.

Paet said that the foreign ministry is working on increasing the number of states where Estonian citizens could travel visa free to; that concerns for example Thailand but also the Persian Gulf area states.
