Vike-Freiberga shares Latvia's experience with Arab countries

On January 15-16, ex-President Vaira Vike-Freiberga participated in a high-level meeting in Beirut, Lebanon. The meeting – "Reforms and Transitions to Democracy" – was organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Western Asia (ECWA), LETA was informed by Vike-Freiberga's secretary Daina Lasmane.

The meeting was aimed at providing opportunities for the decision-makers of Arab countries' emerging democracies to meet with various leaders and experts who faced similar challenges when their countries transitioned to democracy.

There were only three speakers from Europe. Vike-Freiberga spoke during the first session, the only one that was open to all enthusiasts. Her speech gained wide public interest, also among the mass media. The ex-president was asked to describe Latvia's experience in defense and security reforms.

The session was opened by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who confirmed that his country is attempting to be democratic. Ki-moon in turn emphasized that the UN wishes to see more democratic countries within its ranks. He also pointed out that those leaders who are turning against their residents must step down.
