Slesers proposes granting Latvian citizenship to foreigners "donating" EUR 1 mln

Saeima member Ainars Slesers (For A Good Latvia) has come up with an original idea of supplementing the state budget with EUR 10 billion. Slesers suggests that foreigners who "donate" EUR 1 million into a special fund be granted Latvian citizenship.

Slesers said it in an interview with LNT television's morning show "900 sekundes" today.

In Slesers' opinion, up to 10,000 families could receive Latvian citizenship this way, whereas the state budget would receive EUR 10 billion, and Latvia would be able to repay the international loan, writes LETA.

Only such wealthy foreigners would be permitted to apply for Latvian citizenship who live on legal income and allow Latvian authorities to check all their personal data.

In Slesers' opinion, this is a realistic proposal because those who receive Latvian citizenship would automatically become citizens of the European Union. Besides, Latvia is a beautiful, safe and under-populated country, said Slesers.
