China's top legislator proposed closer relations with Estonian parliament

China's top legislator, Wu Bangguo, met with visiting Estonian counterpart Ene Ergma in Beijing on Wednesday, and proposed closer relations between the two nations and their parliaments, The People's Daily reports referring to Xinhua news agency.

Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, praised the recent growth of bilateral relations and cooperation, saying China appreciated Estonia's adherence to the one-China policy, writes LETA.

 

Wu said the China-Estonia relations, established on a basis of mutual respect, equality and cooperation, served the fundamental interests of the two peoples.

 

China would work with the Estonia side to intensify high-level exchanges, expand cooperation in the fields of education, science and technology, and culture, the top Chinese legislator promised.

 

Wu hoped the two nations would strengthen coordination on international issues.

 

The top Chinese legislator suggested the two legislatures promote dialogue and exchanges of views among members on successful experiences of national construction of their respective economies as well as democratic and legal systems so as to inject new vitality to the development of bilateral relations.

 

Ergma, President of the Parliament of the Republic of Estonia, said Estonia was satisfied with the development of the bilateral relations, and she expected future cooperation with China.

 

Ergma said the Estonian parliament would continue to promote friendly ties with the NPC and play a constructive role in promoting bilateral cooperation in science, education and information technology.

 

Ergma is leading a Estonian parliamentary delegation to China at the invitation of Wu. The delegation arrived in China Wednesday and is scheduled to visit the southwestern province of Sichuan and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
