900 police officers might be sacked in Lithuania

Print versionThe Government of Lithuania plans to cut allocations to the police by over 116 million litas (33.54 million euros) next year and due to that around 900 police officers might be dismissed, the Police Department of Lithuania warns.

"It is intended to reduce the allocations to the police in the stated budget projected for next year by over 116 million litas compared to this year. We will have no other option as to dismiss about 900 police officers in 2010 to ensure that our main functions are performed," the department said in its statement on Monday.
The Police Department attempts to avoid the dismissal and has addressed the Finance Ministry with a request to allocate additional 34.2 million litas (9.89 million euros) for wage bill and social insurance contributions, writes ELTA/LETA.
