Estonia to impose 2+2 rule, mask obligation indoors

BC, Tallinn, 10.11.2020.Print version
The Estonian government has decided to reinstate the 2+2 rule and the obligation to wear a mask indoors, with exceptions for eateries and schools, the news portal of public broadcaster ERR writes, cites LETA/BNS.

Minister of Education and Research Mailis Reps said on the "Uudis+" radio program of ERR's Vikerraadio radio channel that the government has decided to reinstate the 2+2 requirement indoors. This means that people may move around in pairs while keeping a distance of two meters with the other pairs. This includes larger stores, shopping malls and government offices, while at checkouts, people must stay behind the marked lines.

Small rural shops and other environments where it is not possible to follow the rule reasonably do not have to go along with this. Also, the 2+2 requirement will not apply to cinemas and theaters or schools, but to entertainment establishments, which must close their doors at midnight.

An exception was also made for eateries. The government negotiated with representatives of restaurants for several days, and meeting them halfway, tables of up to eight people, who must be separated from the next table by at least two meters, will be allowed.

Masks must be worn in public transport, concert halls, cinemas and theaters.

"Unless you are under 12 years of age or have some other medical indication, your mouth and face must be covered. Whether it is a mask or a mask-like product of your own, we did not specify in that regard," Reps said.

However, she noted that severe fines would not be imposed for non-compliance. However, medical institutions or concert organizers have the right to require the visitor to wear a mask.

According to Reps, the government wants to keep society open for as long as possible.
