Owner of Estonian IT company arrested in Belarus

Vladislav Herchykau, CEO and one of the owners of Estonian IT company Bamboo Group OU, was among the 40 people arrested by the authorities of Belarus during the traditional women's and students' march in the country's capital Minsk on Saturday, Belarus media reported cites LETA/BNS.

The names of the people arrested were published by the Viasna human rights center of Belarus on its website spring96.org.


Belarus news portal TUT.BY reported that Herchykau was detained while he was seated in his car in the courtyard of a building on Kozlov Street.


A friend of Herchykau told the portal that Herchykau was first taken to the Interior Ministry office of the Zavodsk region of Minsk. At 11 p.m. on Saturday it was revealed, however, that he had bene taken to the Okrestina prison. 


IT company Bamboo Group OU started business in Estonia in 2007. The company is headquartered in Tallinn but has its development center in Minsk. Herchykau holds a permanent residence permit for stay in Estonia. 


According to its website, Bamboo Group OU is an international IT business with a workforce of nearly 100 employees that is active in Europe, Asia and Africa. Clients of Bamboo Group include Jaguar Land Rover, Skoda, Coca-Cola, Unilever and Orange. Bamboo Group has on several  occasions taken part in various joint stands at international fairs and exhibitions organized by the state-held foundation Enterprise Estonia (EAS).


In 2015, Herchykau was part of a business delegation accompanying the prime minister of Estonia on a visit to Dubai and Oman.
