Lithuania’s Seimas okays e-voting abroad
BC, Vilnius, 26.06.2020.Print version
The Lithuanian Seimas on Friday okayed a proposal to legalize e-voting abroad during the general elections but got stuck with the adoption of the whole package of legislative amendments on voting amid an emergency that was put forward by the Ministry of Justice, informs LETA/BNS.
The legislature approved the proposal of Irena Siauliene, a Social Democratic Labor Party MP, to legalize e-voting at Lithuania’s diplomatic missions, which until now had only offered the option of postal voting.
Some 34 MPs voted for the bill and five deputies voted against, which, however, was insufficient to adopt the piece of legislation that required at least half of MPs, i.e. 71 deputies, casting their votes.
The Seimas on Friday planned to adopt amendments modifying the procedure of elections in an emergency situation, including the extension of early voting and the opening of additional polling stations.
Lithuanian will hold a general election on October 11.
