Three persons held on suspicions of helping foreign country infringe on Latvia's security

The Security Police has detained three persons suspected of activities that might be aimed at helping a foreign country infringe on Latvia’s security, LETA has learned.

A criminal probe into these activities was launched on October 17, based on the Criminal Law’s provisions on activities aimed against Latvia’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, state power or administrative order and committed in an organized group. The investigation is also based on the Criminal Law’s provisions concerning activities aimed at assisting a foreign country or foreign organization to undermine Latvia’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, state power or national security.


The Security Police would not name the foreign country in question.


The three suspects in the case were detained on November 23 after police conducted searches at premises related to these persons. The persons have been declared suspects in the probe but have not been remanded in custody.


Since the investigation is still ongoing, the Security Police cannot give more detailed information about the case.


If found guilty, the suspects may face prison sentences of up to 15 years.
