Contraband cigarettes worth EUR 2 mln busted on Lithuanian-Polish border

BC, Vilnius, 20.11.2018.Print version
A shipment of contraband cigarettes, worth around 2 million euros, has been detained by Lithuanian customs officers on the Polish border, reported LETA/BNS.

The shipment was busted last week but officials finished counting the cigarettes only on Monday, the Customs Criminal Service reports.

A mobile patrol group from Kaunas Territorial Customs stopped a Scania truck heading for Poland on Nov. 12. All in all, 641,000 packs of Belarusian cigarettes meant for Western Europe and hidden under bags of polystyrol were found inside.

The driver provided conflicting explanations, initially saying that he was carrying a shipment of polystyrol to Poland, despite the document stating that the shipment was meant for Germany.

The driver, a Lithuanian citizen, was detained and released after questioning, signing an undertaking not to leave his place of residence.
