Estonian rescue workers' average basic salary is set to rise by 23.6 percent in 2019, reaching 1,000 euros, reports LETA/BNS.

Interior Minister Andres Anvelt and director general of the Rescue Board Kuno Tammearu on Wednesday agreed on the final breakdown of the pay rise for rescuers and rescue officials, according to which rescue workers' average basic salary will rise by 23.6 percent, to 1,000 euros, next year, spokespeople for the Interior Ministry said. The rise will primarily benefit front-line workers or rescuers.

Some 7.9 million euros in the next year's additional budget was earmarked for the wage increase.

"This is a historic breakthrough – while we've taken small steps towards a pay rise in previous years, this is a major spurt in the right direction," Anvelt said. In his words, rescue workers' salaries will continue to grow in the future as well, the final goal being for rescuers to draw at least the national average pay.

Rescue workers' basic salary averaged 808 euros in 2017.
