Riga liquidates its coordination center for asylum seekers

BC, Riga, 23.11.2017.Print version
In October 2017, Riga liquidated its coordination center for asylum seekers, the Riga City Council spokesman Ugis Vidauskis confirmed for LETA.

He said that the center was liquidated as of October 1 after its functions were re-evaluated.

"It was concluded that the center has achieved its initial goals, including coordination of operation with other municipal and state institutions, and the center is no longer necessary," said Vidauskis.

Its functions have been now delegated to other municipal structures – Riga Municipal Police, the council’s welfare department and other structural units.

As reported, Vilnis Kirsis, the head of the opposition Unity party’s faction at the Riga City Council, sent a letter to Riga City Mayor Nils Usakovs in summer, demanding to urgently close down the coordination center for refugees.

He said that several thousands of euros of tax-payers’ money are spent monthly on maintenance of the center and wages, but the center shows no results apart from well-paid jobs for persons related to the Riga City Council officials.

The center was established in March 2016 and its head was Harmony’s representative Sandris Bergmanis. The Riga City Council explained then that the center should provide social assistance to refugees, solve accommodation, education and integration issues.
