Several hundred pensioners in Riga participate in rally to stop poverty

Several hundred pensioners have gathered in Strelnieki Square in central Riga during which signatures are being collected under the petition demanding that further growth of poverty among the elderly should be stopped and health care services ensured to them.

LETA observed that pensioners from all over Latvia have gathered to demonstrate against poverty among the elderly.


The event is peaceful, with poster being held with various slogans on them pointing out to the situation pensioners are facing in Latvia at the moment.

 

Welfare Minister Janis Reirs (Unity) is also on hand.

 

As reported, the Latvian Federation of Pensioners is today holding a rally in the Riga center during which signatures are being collected under the petition demanding that further growth of poverty among the elderly should be stopped and health care services ensured to them.

 

The federation has invited representatives of the 114 member organizations throughout Latvia to attend the rally in Riga. Invitations to the rally have been sent also to the partner organizations and state officials.

 

The motto of the event is "Humane and dignified old age".

 

The purpose of the demonstration as stated by the federation in the application to the local council is to draw public attention to poverty among the elderly.
