President: Estonia must repair ID card's security risk, move on

BC, Tallinn, 08.09.2017.Print version
Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid said that the theoretical security risk related to the ID card which was recently detected has to be repaired as soon as possible and since all risks can never be removed, the most vulnerable e-services have to be abandoned and the development of the digital society has to continue, informs LETA/BNS.

"The defect has to be repaired as soon as possible and secure certificates have to be issued," Kaljulaid said in an interview with the Vikerraadio radio station of the public broadcaster ERR. "But philosophically -- I will point out -- that the certificates will be secure only until the computing power grows to a certain point," she added.

"Theoretically we are all in a risk situation all the time. The question here is the probability of the risk realizing. And this does not only concern the digital world. Crossing the road is connected to a risk. We take certain risks in life. And now taking all that into account we have to make decisions which e-services can be used and the trustworthiness of which has been compromised," Kaljulaid said.

"We as a digital society probably sense and bear these risks differently than people elsewhere. Once again we have the opportunity of being the first ones in the world to show that in such a case as this it is possible to make corrections and move forward. Not go back," the president said.
