Latvian government supports increasing soldiers' wages by EUR 50

BC, Riga, 30.08.2017.Print version
The government of Latvia on August 29th approved the Defense Ministry's proposal to increase soldiers' monthly wages by EUR 50, reports LETA.

The Defense Ministry explains that reforming soldiers' wages, to make them competitive on the job market and reduce the number of soldiers leaving the Armed Forces, commenced in 2014.

One part of the reform was carried out in 2016, when new criteria were included in soldiers' salaries, including training and qualifications. That, however, did not make soldiers' wages competitive on Latvian labor market.

The minimum and average wages have both increased in Latvia since 2014. Furthermore, according to the government's decision of May 9, the minimum monthly wage will be raised EUR 50, making soldiers' wages non-competitive as they would only exceed the minimum wage by EUR 40.

Hence the Defense Ministry's proposal to increase all soldiers and officers' monthly salaries by EUR 50 as of October 1.

At the moment, a soldier who has served in the National Armed Forces for one year is paid EUR 470 a month. After the pay rise, such a soldier will receive EUR 520.
