Estonian MFA: Egypt EU's key partner in solving multiple crises

Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sven Mikser on August 22nd at a meeting with his Egyptian colleague Sameh Hassan Shoukry in Tallinn said that Egypt is one of the key partners of the European Union in solving the problems of the EU's southern neighborhood, reports LETA/BNS.

The ministers noted that the European Union and Egypt must jointly find a solution for the problems of illegal migration, extremism and terrorism, spokespeople for the Estonian Foreign Ministry said. "Cooperation and exchange of information must be improved in order to cope better," Mikser said.

 

The ministers discussed intensifying the relations between the two countries, the relations between Egypt and the European Union and the situation in the southern neighborhood of the EU, including Lybia. Speaking about the Estonian presidency of the Council of the European Union, Mikser said that stability in the southern neighborhood and in the Middle East in general is very important for Estonia. "The situation east as well as south of the European Union is of strategic importance to us as it is directly linked with the security of Europe," Mikser said in a press release.

 

Mikser and Shoukry said that the relations between Estonia and Egypt are good and mapped the opportunities for increasing cooperation. "Estonia, for its part, remains prepared to share its experience as an e-state, we will contribute to the digital topics of the EU-Africa summit," Mikser said. He expressed hope that Egypt's tourism sector recover as well, as tourism is the leading sector of Egypt's economy and the country has been an important destination for Estonian tourists, but also pointed out the importance of ensuring the safety of the tourists.

 

Mikser also recognized the Egypt's achievements so far in carrying out significant economic reforms. The ministers also discussed cooperation in international organizations.

 

This is the first high level official visit from Egypt to Estonia.
