Latvian government supports bill restricting face-covering
BC, Riga, 22.08.2017.Print version
The government in Latvia on August 22nd endorsed draft legislation that would ban wearing face-covering clothes or accessories in public places, reports LETA.
The Justice Ministry points out that the aim of the bill is to ensure a
harmonious and open society in Latvia.
The bill will now be submitted for Saeima approval.
The draft law, which has been worked out by the Justice Ministry, has drawn
objections from the Foreign Ministry.
The Justice Ministry's original version of the bill was reviewed at a
meeting of state secretaries in the fall of 2016. The bill proposes a number of
restrictions on face covering in public places as well as exemptions when the
restrictions will not apply.
According to the bill, the definition of a public place does not apply to
houses of worship, places of prayer and other religious practices.
