ECHR orders Latvia to pay EUR 37,000 in compensations in 2016
BC, Riga, 26.07.2017.Print version
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) last year ordered Latvia to pay compensations totaling EUR 37,246, informs LETA, according to the Foreign Ministry's report on the performance of Latvia's representative to the international human rights bodies in 2016.
According to the report, the amount of compensations awarded by the court
last year was smaller compared to 2015 because the court did not find any infringements
on part of Latvia in more than a half of cases. Moreover, in 2016 the court did
not award any compensations for pecuniary damages in any case against Latvia.
Last year the ECHR made 25 rulings in 26 claims against Latvia, down by three rulings compared to 2015. In nine cases, it did not find any violations of the European Convention on Human Rights, and in one case it approved a settlement between the Latvian government and the claimant. In 2016, the court also requested observations from the Latvian government in 20 new cases, the same number as in 2015.
