Latvian government approves health care reform

BC, Riga, 26.07.2017.Print version
The Latvian government on July 25th approved the conceptual report about reforms in the national health care system, writes LETA.

The Health Ministry said in the report that the responsibilities and competence of local governments in provision of primary health care should be specified, adopting the Scandinavian practice.

The medical personnel will be divided into six categories in order to improve the pay system.

It is also planned to introduce a new specialty for medical nurses - a general care nurse - to prevent overspecialization of nurses and to tackle the shortage of nurses.

The Health Ministry proposes to change the procedure for selecting the providers of the government-paid health care services, choosing strategic procurement over the existing procedure of distributing the budget mainly among the existing providers that meet the requirements.

The most substantial changes will be made in organization of strategic procurement, consolidation and strengthening of the data analysis capacity, the ministry said.
