BC, Riga, 03.07.2017.Print version
Personal identity numbers are issued to residents of Latvia from July 1, 2017 without birth dates in them, informs LETA.

Saeima in 2015 approved in the third and final reading amendments to the Population Registry prepared by the Interior Ministry, which foresees that identity numbers are issued without birth dates in them from July 1, 2017. From this date, persons will also be able to request a new identity number without their birth dates in them.

Residents who have been issued an identity number until June 30, 2017 will be able to voluntarily request new identity number without birth dates in them after July 1, 2017 if they wish. After the new identity number is issued, it cannot be changed at a later time and remains permanent.

The new identity number will be made up of eleven digits. The first two digits in the new identity number will be 32, while the remainder nine digits will be generated randomly.

At the moment, identity number in Latvia are made up of 11 digits - the person's birth date in the first six digits, followed by another five digits.

The amendments have been approved with the aim of avoiding discrimination connected to a person's age.
