Police General Markitans retires

BC, Riga, 20.03.2017.Print version
Police General Guntars Markitans, head of the State Police's Riga Region Police Department, has decided to retire effective March 23, reportsl LETA.

The State Police said in a statement to the media that Markitans had decided to step down and retire. Colonel Aleksandrs Bukevics has been appointed acting chief of the Riga Region Police Department, starting Thursday.

"Markitans played an important role during the 1991 Barricades developments - then head of Bauska Police Department used his initiative to set up a unit of volunteers who traveled to Riga to guard the buildings of the Interior Ministry and Council of Ministers. The State Police have a high opinion of Markitans' experience and his contribution to rebuilding the State Police following the restoration of the independence of Latvia," said the State Police's Chief Ints Kuzis.

Riga Region is different from other regions in Latvia - because of its large population, more than 50% of all crimes are committed in Riga Region. In addition, Riga Region is the financial and economic center of Latvia, where most major public events take place. Therefore, law enforcement and keeping the peace in Riga Region is more challenging than elsewhere in Latvia. For this reason, the next head of the Riga Region Police Administration will have to meet a number of requirements on qualifications and work experience, said Kuzis.

The TV3 television reported earlier this month that Markitans was driving his Ford Mondeo police automobile when he was pulled over by Riga Highway Police officers for speeding. Markitans said that he was inspecting officers at work. He was eventually let go by the Highway Police officers although, according to unofficial information, his automobile was traveling at 130 kilometers per hour before he was pulled over.

In the meantime, the Internal Security Bureau has opened a criminal process on failure to act following a traffic infraction.
