Savisaar can remain suspended Tallinn mayor until fall elections

BC, Tallinn, 03.02.2017.Print version
Former chairman of the Center Party and suspended mayor of Tallinn Edgar Savisaar can only step down from office and if he does not do that, the situation will be solved after the local elections in the fall.

"No one will pressure him to give up the mayoral post," secretary general of the Center Party Jaak Aab told on Thursday. "I think the current situation will get an end after the local elections in the fall. Savisaar is not getting paid as mayor at the moment. I think that if he was to be allowed to return to the office of mayor, he would give up his paid post of the party's history advisor," he said.

Aab added that the mayoral issue has not been discussed in the party. "The city is being led as acting mayor [Taavi Aas] and deputy mayors are working," he added.

According to Aab it is also not clear at the moment whether and how Savisaar is planning to take part in the elections as the latter has not said anything about it. Aab said that he expects Savisaar to run as a candidate of Center Party as he is a member of the party.

Savisaar stands accused of accepting bribes, money laundering, embezzlement, and accepting prohibited donations for the Center Party. At the end of last year he lost his position as party chairman and at the start of this week became the party's history advisor.
