Police seize 774,000 illegal cigarettes from man in Daugavpils region

Print versionPolice who raided properties and a motor vehicle of a man in the southeastern Latvian region of Daugavpils seized 774,000 illegal cigarettes during the searches, police representatives informed LETA.

Ksenija Belova, a
spokeswoman for the Latgale regional department of the Latvian State Police,
said that Criminal Police officers acted on a tip-off suggesting that the man,
born in 1976, might be involved in illegal dealing in excised goods.
A criminal probe was launched to check the information. Last
week, law enforcement officers succeeded in establishing the man's connection
with criminal activities.
Multiple raids on the man's properties and a search of his
car resulted in the seizure of 774,000 cigarettes with Belarusian, Russian and
Kazakh excise stamps.
The man now faces a jail term of up to five years, community
service or a fine.
