20-30 asylum seekers to arrive in Latvia under EU refugee relocation scheme in May

About 20-30 asylum seekers may arrive in Latvia in two groups in May under the EU refugee relocation scheme, Maira Roze, Deputy Director of the Latvian Citizenship and Migration Office, said on the LNT commercial television on Thursday morning, cites LETA.

So far 23 people have arrived in Latvia under the EU refugee relocation scheme, and first of them have already been granted the alternative status.

Roze explained that they had been granted the alternative status because under the law the refugee status could be given only to those who are being persecuted on grounds of race, religion, nationality, ethnic origin or political opinion.

Another 20-30 asylum seekers may arrive in Latvia in May. Roze said the Citizenship and Migration Office was planning the arrivals to make sure that the country’s only center for asylum seekers in Mucenieki would have room both for the asylum seekers relocated from Southern Europe and possible migrants crossing Latvia’s eastern border.

She said that in recent years Latvia had seen an increase in asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Congo whereas previously many of the asylum seekers were from Ukraine and Georgia, and their asylum requests were mostly rejected.
