Estonia's aim is to have a bigger say in global security issues and one of our biggest foreign political goals after EU presidency is becoming a temporary member of the United Nations Security Council, Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Roivas said on May 2nd during meetings at the UN headquarters in New York, informs LETA/BNS.

According to Roivas the phrase "never alone" holds a very clear meaning to Estonia, and therefore Estonia has to think not only about its own region or Europe but also have a say in topics concerning global security, spokespeople for the government said.

"Only that way we can keep issues important to us in the limelight and be sure that we are heard and our positions taken into account," Roivas said.

A good example of Estonia's role in the UN becoming more important is making the election process of UN secretary general more transparent. Estonia has been a part of drawing up the election criteria and has stood for their implementation. For the first time in 70 years countries have publicly nominated their candidates and hearings are taking place to get familiar with their positions.

"For Estonia the transparency of the election process is very important, because it is in our interests that the new UN secretary general who is to be elected next year is the best out of all the candidates and is independent in his or her positions," Roivas said.

Roivas on Monday spoke at the year's most important meeting of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) about Estonia's experience on how innovation and e-services support the development of democracy and economy. He also visited the New York office of Transferwise and met with Estonian honorary consuls in the U.S. to discuss economic relations between Estonia and the U.S.

In addition, he met with president of the UN General Assembly Mogens Lykketoft and executive director of the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) Anthony Lake.

On Tuesday Roivas will meet with UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon.
