The Lithuanian government approved on May 2nd the legislative amendments to criminalize travel abroad for terrorist purposes, informs LETA/BNS.

The amendments will now be sent to the parliament for approval.

The Ministry of Justice proposes that travel abroad for terrorist purposes be punishable by a prison sentence of up to seven years.

The offense is defined as a travel with the purpose of "organizing or committing a terrorist crime or participating in the commission of a terrorist crime, or participating in the activities of a terrorist group having the aim of committing terrorist crimes, or training terrorists, or being trained as terrorists."

Justice Minister Juozas Bernatonis said that the amendments had been drafted in the light of the UN Security Council and Council of Europe's documents.

"Persons going to, for example, the ISIS-controlled land to fight on the terrorists' side would be prosecuted in Lithuania," he told BNS.
