Moldova's government has to be given a chance to carry out reforms that are necessary in the country, which is facing political, economic and financial difficulties, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius, on a visit to Chisinau, said on April 27th, cites LETA/BNS.

"One hundred days is not much, but the tasks are very complex (and it is) a chance to show the result. I think it wouldn't be the best option to do nothing but wait and give the initiative away to other 'observers'," the minister told BNS by telephone from the Moldovan capital.

However, "there won't be any support in advance" and Moldova cannot expect support unless its "efforts and concrete reforms" are visible, he added.

According to the minister, his visit is aimed at finding out what the situation in the country is and sending a message, once again, about what Europe expects from Moldova.

Linkevicius noted that he was the first foreign minister to pay an official visit to Moldova during the new government's first 100 days in office.

The Lithuanian minister said that he had underlined the importance of the necessary reforms during his meetings with Moldova's President Nicolae Timofti, Foreign Minister Andrei Galbur, members of the opposition and candidates in the upcoming presidential election.

"This is about the banking sector, talks with the IMF and the freedom of the press," he said.
