Ex-Soviet interrogator found guilty in deportation case in Lithuania

BC, Vilnius, 07.12.2015.Print version
The Court of Appeal of Lithuania has found former interrogator of the Soviet State Security Ministry Aleksandr Kardanovskij guilty of deportations, reports LETA.

The Russian citizen, 98, residing in Lithuania, was on Friday sentenced to seven years in prison but was pardoned due to his medical state, a court spokeswoman told BNS.

The man was also ordered to pay EUR 69,000 in non-pecuniary damages to six victims.

In May 2013, Kaunas Regional Court acquitted Kardanovskij but the Court of Appeal re-heard the case and collected evidence and found the man guilty.

As a Soviet security officer, Kardanovskij signed conclusions on families' suitability for deportation and the documents were part of deportation cases.

The verdict can still be appealed to the Supreme Court of Lithuania.
