The ruling coalition today supported allocating EUR 4.3 million to support Turkey in solving the refugee situation, Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis (Unity) said after today's Cabinet meeting, informs LETA.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has called on the EU to allocate to Turkey EUR 2.5 million within the next two years to help it maintain the over two million asylum seekers on its territory.

According to unofficial information, Latvia would have to pay into the fund EUR 4.38 million in 2016 and 2017.

The ruling coalition today unanimously supported allocating EUR 4.3 million to Turkey to help tackle the refugee problem. Rihards Kozlovskis said that the decision was made, as Latvia must remain united with its EU partners, as Turkey plays a large role in solving the refugee matter.

Kozlovskis also admitted that Latvia would prefer to pay the sum in 2017, but that an agreement with the European Commission must first be made. He said that Latvia would also like to pay this sum in parts, and not all at once.
