Estonia preparing for tenders to find asylum seeker and refugee service providers

BC, Tallinn, 25.11.2015.Print version
The Estonian ministries of social affairs and interior are preparing for several tenders aimed at finding providers of services to the refugees about to arrive in Estonia under the European Union refugee relocation scheme, reports LETA.

"Our wish is to find a partner with the first public call for proposals who would coordinate teaching of the language," Oskar Lepik, media adiser to the Ministry of Social Affairs, told BNS on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Social Affairs is preparing the tender in collaboration with the Innove foundation. The tender will be announced by the Interior Ministry because the money for language teaching programs comes from the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) that is managed in Estonia by the Interior Ministry.

"Next a partner is to be found to deal with translation services, logistics and similar," Lepik said.

"The last item on the list is a tender to find a partner to coordinate the search for dwellings for the refugees on the rental market," the spokesman said. The tender will be announced probably at the beginning of the new year.

Estonia's Interior Minister Hanno Pevkur said last week that the first asylum seekers to be accepted by Estonia under the EU refugee allocation arrangement will probably arrive here at the beginning of the new year, not at the end of 2015.

Pevkur said at a government press conference that considering the problems that have arisen in Italy and Greece the estimates suggesting that the first refugees will arrive in Estonia still this year are "very optimistic."

Under the EU plan, Estonia has agreed to accept about 550 African and Middle East refugees from Italy and Greece over a two-year period.
