Estonian PM: war is still going on in Europe

BC, Tallinn, 17.11.2015.Print version
A war in Europe continues and the security environment for Estonia has drastically changed as a result of this for a long time, Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Roivas said in a speech on the topic of the EU in parliament on Tuesday, cites LETA.

"The main measure of success of whatever policy is success of the policy in the immediate neighborhood," Roivas said. "While it is true that it isn't possible to impose one's notions and values on others, every country must have the possibility to freely choose the lifestyle that is suitable for it as well as its allied relationships," he said.

Europe and European lifestyle do not pose a danger to anyone, the prime minister said.

"War and aggression are not instruments of international law, justice cannot grow out of injustice. Therefore the Minsk II agreements must be fulfilled in each and every point, that is, to the point where Ukrainian border guards, not a foreign power or its extension, will stand on the Ukrainian border along its entire length," Roivas said.

He said there can be no bargaining as regards the fulfilment of the terms of the agreement and cooperation elsewhere must not mean concessions made by Europe in the neighborhood.

"Fulfilment of the Minsk agreements unfortunately does not bring with it justice being done, it only means a partial restoration of the previous state of affairs," the prime minister said.

"The damage of war remains, our eyes are open and Europe must draw the necessary conclusions from this. The common foreign policy, including policy of sanctions, must be persevering, consistent, and capable of reacting to escalation if necessary," he said.

"Success of the neighborhood policy and a blunt appraisal of the security situation must become the cornerstones of the EU foreign and security policy strategy to be completed next year and they are and will remain priorities for Estonia," Roivas said.

"Where the goal of the European Union's southern partnership is broad-based partnership and cooperation, Eastern Partnership entails also the European perspective," he said. "Our offer of values to our neighbors must in the future include gradual sharing of the EU freedoms –- free movement of labor, goods, services, capital and data – with neighboring countries like they are shared today by some non-EU members," Roivas said. In order for this to happen, the keywords for next year must be visa-freedom and free trade for Georgia and Ukraine, he added.
