28 Iraqi citizens detained for illegal border crossing in Latvia

On October 1st, in Kraslava Region in Latvia, 28 Iraqi citizens were detained for illegal border crossing, LETA was informed by the State Border Guard.

Border guards detained 28 persons on the Kraslava-Varnavica road in Kaplava County - seven men, six women and 15 children with Iraqi documents.

 

The Iraqi citizens illegally entered Latvia from Belarus.

 

A criminal process for illegal border crossing has been started.

 

All 28 Iraqis have requested asylum in Latvia.

 

The State Border Guard informs it does not have any more free space to house illegal immigrants entering the country. Currently, there are already 134 persons in the housing center for illegal and detained immigrants in Daugavpils. The Iraqis detained on Thursday have thus been taken to the refugee center in Mucenieki.

 

In the first nine months of the year, a total of 373 foreigners have been detained for illegal border crossing, with a majority of them Vietnamese citizens.
