In order for Latvia to take-in 531 refugees, approximately EUR 16 million will be needed, Interior Ministry State Secretary Ilze Petersone-Godmane told members of the press today, informs LETA.

She emphasized that this is the indicative sum, with most of it coming from the EU's refugee and integration fund. These funds will be available already this year.

However, Latvia itself must ensure the necessary infrastructure. Petersone-Godmane did not give a clear answer on financing for the mentioned infrastructure, as this decision will be made by the government. She said that financing is necessary to expand the refugee center in Mucenieki, as well as for Latvian language courses, healthcare and other needs.

''The main matter to be decided is whether this financing will be allocated,'' she said, adding that national financing is important to implement the model offered by the task-force.

As reported, according to a decision taken during a meeting of EU interior ministers last week, Latvia for now will have to take in an additional 281 refugees, thus, the total number of refugees the country will have to accept is 531.
